For a long time, I thought of the International Library of Poetry and its online - Poetry.com scamming would-be poets by advertising big cash prizes, then accepting everything submitted to them as “high quality” work, and asking the poets to purchase the book-sized volumes with their poetry at a high price. Now, Watermark Media Group, the original owner of the Poetry.com domain, has gone out of business, and the domain name has been sold to Lulu.com, the big online print-on-demand self-publishing site.
from Publishers Weekly:
“Lulu Poetry Separate from Former Scam Site,” by Lynn Andriani“When self-publishing site Lulu announced earlier this week that it had launched a Poetry site at www.Poetry.com, some confusion ensued. That’s because before Lulu bought the domain Poetry.com, it was owned by Watermark Media, which had operated a “contest” on the site that was largely regarded by the online poetry community as a scam.”
Will Lulu Poetry be any better than the original Poetry.com? It’s still vanity publishing, but at least Lulu appears to be upfront about what they do.
